The Division of Cardiology provides primary and tertiary care for acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases. Resources include: a Coronary Care Unit with state-of-the-art hemodynamic monitoring; telemetry unit; cardiac catheterization lab, providing diagnostic evaluation including coronary angiography, angioplasty and EPS; extensive non-invasive evaluation utilizing echocardiography and stress-testing; specialized ambulatory arrhythmia evaluation; and cardiology outpatient clinic. Residents are exposed to all aspects of Cardiology, thereby obtaining expertise in the management of both acutely ill and chronically ill cardiac patients. Faculty interests include: the treatment of malignant ventricular arrhythmias, non- invasive cardiac imaging, coronary angioplasty and cardiac rehabilitation. The Division of Gastroenterology combines active clinical services with diverse research interests. Residents participate in both the inpatient consultation services and the outpatient clinic. Residents gain expertise in flexible sigmoidoscopy with the guidance of the division faculty. Upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, liver biopsy, and esophageal varieces are among the procedures performed by division members. Faculty clinical and research interests include: esophageal motility; biliary and therapeutic endoscopy; hepatology and hepatic encephalopathy; peptic ulcer disease; and malabsorption. Contact: Kevin
Mullen, M.D., Gastroenterology Physician
Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care State-of-the-art facilities in the 16-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit provide residents with comprehensive training in all medical aspects of critical care under the close supervision of the division faculty. Technical expertise is acquired in arterial cannulation, pulmonary artery catheterization, and management of mechanical ventilators. The division is also responsible for the pulmonary consultation service, pulmonary function and exercise laboratory, sleep disorders laboratory, outpatient clinic, and pulmonary rehabilitation service. Faculty research interests include: respiratory regulation, sleep disorders, ventilatory muscle function, hemodynamic monitoring, and medical decision making in the critically ill. The Division of Infectious Diseases provides one of the most active consultation services in the hospital. Consults are received from all medical and surgical divisions including the medical, surgical, and burn intensive care units. Outpatient experience is gained in the areas of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, and mycobacterial diseases. The Cuyahoga County Tuberculosis Clinic at MetroHealth enjoys a national reputation and receives patient referrals from throughout the Eastern United States and Canada. Faculty research interests include: host defense mechanisms, tuberculosis, cellular immunology, burn infections, molecular biology and microbiology, and clinical studies of antimicrobial efficacy. The Division of Rheumatology and Immunology provides teaching and patient care through the inpatient consultation service and two interdisciplinary outpatient clinics, Arthritis Clinic and Lupus Clinic. Faculty research interests include the acute phase reactant, C-reactive protein and mechanisms of inflammation, systemic lupus erythematosus, and ankylosing spondylitis. Contact: Irving
Kushner, M.D., Rheumatology Physician
The Division of Hematology/Oncology supervises an inpatient oncology unit providing comprehensive and coordinated medical and surgical care to oncology patients. Members of the division are active in the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) and participate in ongoing clinical trials. The division also provides learning opportunities in Oncology Clinic, special hematology, weekly tumor board and the hematology/oncology consultation services. Faculty interest include: iron metabolism, red blood cell disorders, hematologic malignancies, head and neck malignancies and the medical management of gynecologic malignancies. The Division of Endocrinology provides teaching and patient care opportunities through the consultation service and the outpatient Endocrine and Diabetes Clinics. Faculty interests include: thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules, diabetes and insulin therapy in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The Division of Nephrology provides care to both hospitalized and ambulatory patients through its consultation services, Hypertension and Nephrology Outpatient Clinics, and Renal Dialysis Center.
