Message From Chairman
Dear Senior Medical Student, MetroHealth Medical Center, formerly Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital, is a nationally renowned academic medical center with a century-long affiliation as a major teaching hospital of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. MetroHealth is a 550-bed tertiary referral center with a diverse patient population, including a referral population from the suburbs of Cleveland as well as the largest Medicaid population in the State of Ohio. MetroHealth is a known for excellence in patient care, excellence in the education of physicians, and excellence in research. It is an absolutely terrific place to train in Internal Medicine. The Department of Medicine offers an innovative program that has trained thousands of physicians in Internal Medicine over the last 50 years. We offer international travel in the International Health Track, formal research training (including a Masters degree in some cases) in the Physician Scientist Program, a Primary Care Track, a Med/Peds program and diverse research opportunities with world class scientists. Metro is a sought after clerkship for Case medical students and the housestaff play an important role in the teaching of these medical students. Cutting edge information technology with a paperless medical record in the outpatient setting facilitates patient care. MetroHealth prides itself in the autonomy of its housestaff, the flexibility of its diverse programs, the dedication of its faculty, and a collegial, supportive approach to housestaff training. The Department of Medicine includes over 100 Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine faculty members. There are eleven divisions providing training in Cardiology, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Hospital Medicine, Geriatrics and Palliative Care and General Internal Medicine. Nineteen faculty members in the department of medicine spend more than half their time on research. Currently MetroHealth Medical Center has about 40 million dollars of grants per year, mostly from the National Institute of Health. Residents have many opportunities to participate in research (collaborate with mentors on the Metro campus and throughout the CWRU community, present at national meetings, and to pursue formal research training). Graduates have enjoyed an 89% pass rate on the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Exam over the last five years. Over the last five years, 97% of graduates who pursued specialty training have secured fellowships in the sub-specialty of their choice at such institutions as Harvard, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, Mayo Clinic, University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh, University of Iowa, and Emory University (See alumni section). I started my tenure as the Chairperson of the Department of Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center in June, 2002. I am committing resources to build on the excellence of our training program and to assure continued growth in research and educational programs over the next five years. MetroHealth Medical Center is an exciting place to be right now! Why should you come to MetroHealth Medical Center for your Internal Medicine training?
We look forward to meeting you and will be happy to answer your questions about Internal Medicine and showing you the wonderful place that is MetroHealth Medical Center.
Alfred F. Connors, Jr., M.D.
